LAS
RUBIAS DEL NORTE: Latin Sounds & Classical
Harmonies. 2:30pm and 4:00pm.
Las Rubias’ sound is a re-invention, a nostalgic throwback to
a time and place mostly imagined where Peruvian waltzes, Andean huaynos
and Cuban Guajiras mix with French opera, Cowboy tunes and Bollywood
classics. The result plays like a dreamy soundtrack with classical
harmonies set to a Latin beat. Songs on their latest album Panamericana
have been called “sparlking gems” (The New Yorker) and
their harmonies described as “pure as Andean air” (LA
Times). The group has been featured on NPR's Weekend Edition, and
Studio 360.
Harlem Suite, 4th Floor: 2:30pm
and 4:00pm.

“the best band in New York right now” (WFMU), the 9-piece
band features the Gypsy accordion wizardry of Peter Stan.

HAZMAT
MODINE: A Global Take on Blues & Americana.
3:30pm & 5:30pm
Hazmat Modine’s global take on Americana has the energy of a
Romanian brass band and the soul of a vintage blues recording. Fronted
by two virtuoso harmonicists, backed by tuba, horns and guitars –
they are known for incorporating rare instruments and collaborate
with Tuvan Throat singers Huun Huur Tu and other esoteric performers.
Their cd was named one of 2006 ten best by the Montreal Gazette and
Froots.
Harlem Suite, 4th Floor: 3:30pm & 5:30pm
ONE RING ZERO – Klezmer-circus-lit-rock.
5:00 pm
One Ring Zero’s ethno-pop could have been played at a Balkan-embassy
party in the 1930s, but that’s not all: The songs on its ambitious
As Smart As We Are–featuring lyrics by literary figures including
Paul Auster, Rick Moody and Margaret Atwood–touch on They Might
Be Giants whimsy, Tom Waits clank and Marianne Faithful melancholy.
